On Jan. 24, 2023, the first Greater Cleveland Partnership Sustainability Summit took place at the Huntington Convention Center. Among the more than 300 Greater Cleveland business leaders was Three D Metals HR and Safety Manager Gretchen Gutekunst, who attended to get ideas and support for Three D’s sustainability initiatives.
“My biggest takeaway was the reassurance that we are all in this together,” she said. “A lot of us are starting from a very early stage, and we learned there are several resources out there to help us.”
“A Great Experience”
The summit was designed to help area businesses connect and find resources to further their respective sustainability initiatives. Several industries were represented, including manufacturing, healthcare and hospitality. In addition, several college students from Case Western Reserve University were invited to attend.
Gutekunst was especially impressed with the keynote speaker, Chris Laszlow, Ph.D., a professor of organizational behavior and well-published sustainability expert.
“It was really awesome to hear about how the way we need to think about sustainability and ESG – environmental, social and governance – is value creation,” she said. “Not doing it just to do it, but to do it in a way that adds value to your company, to your employees, to your customers.”

Looking ahead, the company is determining more specific ways to make its processes more environmentally friendly and eliminate unnecessary waste.
“The next steps of what we’re going to do is form a team of like-minded individuals who really want to see sustainability succeed here,” she said. “We’re really going to look at what our carbon footprint is, determine who we are as a company and figure out what our mission is in terms of sustainability.”
